The boys get up a little early on school days so they can have 15-20 minutes watching cartoons before the bus gets to the house. Typically it's The Fairly OddParents or Fan boy and Chumm Chumm. Today, Lance turned the channel from ever popular Nickelodeon to the Boomerang Network and the original Popeye cartoons were on. They got to watch about 3 1/2 and were bummed they wouldn't see the end of the last one. I broke it to them that Popeye would win, so they wouldn't feel they were missing much.
It was so much fun listening to them and the cartoons this morning. I would say about 75% of the cartoons are just music and the rest dialog (and not very deep dialog at that). I had forgotten how nice is to not have every piece of animation scripted with dialog but using the music to help tell the story. It also allows the children (or adults) to use their imagination. You get caught up in the action on the screen and if the little guy can beat the bully then get the girl. Of course he can; but he needs a boost of something healthy to make him stronger. As the boys ran down the driveway this morning they were discussing what ways on how Popeye was going to beat Brutus next.
They've acted out some cartoons before; but this was a first time a discussion came from one making them think of different possibilities. Thanks Popeye for giving my kids a different perspective.
